Who is Teaching?


Justin Kurup.
Justin Kurup has worked as the Humane Education Coordinator for the East Bay SPCA since the beginning of 2013. He graduated from the University of California, Davis with a BS in Animal Science with an emphasis in companion & captive animals. Previously, Justin has taught life skills & competitive speech at the high school level. Though his true passion is education, Justin has enjoyed working at several large animal agricultural facilities as well. Growing up in the San Francisco bay area, Justin has been able to form many relationships & connections with the communities, rescue groups, & veterinary clinics he has served over the past decade. He has been devoted to a humane lifestyle and recently adopted a playful pit mix puppy of his own named Meeko. Justin believes that working with diverse populations is the best part of his job!

For our summer camp programs we hire seasonal staff to teach camp in addition to our education staff. Camp coordinators are typically teachers and educators who have much experience working with children and a passion for animals. 

What is Included?

The fee includes:

  • Daily snack
  • Take-home projects
  • T-shirt for Summer sessions only

Application Process

  • Parents of children wishing to attend Animal Camp must register online for the camp session they wish their child to attend.
  • All registrations are processed in the order upon which they are received. If an registration application is submitted without payment, the application will not be processed, and the child’s spot in camp will not be held. Once payment is received the application will be processed.
  • Once a camp session is full, it will be noted on the website. If the camp is not marked as full, there is still room for additional campers.
  • There will be one wait list for each camp, with up to five students on each list. As space opens, wait-listed campers will be contacted in the order in which they signed-up. Campers will only be contacted should an opening arise for the session which they wish to register. E-mail (education@eastbayspca.org) us if you wish to be added to the wait list. Please include your name, child’s name, the session you hope for your child to attend, and the best number to reach you at in your e-mail.
  • Once you have completed payment for your child's registration, a confirmation screen should appear. Additional information will be sent to you via email at least one week prior to your child's camp session.

FAQ

Where will the camp be located?
Camps are located at our Dublin Adoption Center (4651 Gleason Drive, Dublin) in the classroom and Oakland Campus (8323 Baldwin Street, Oakland) in the Training and Education Center.
How many campers are there in each session?
There is a maximum of 20 campers per session for grades K-5 and a maximum of 16 campers for grades 6-8.
How many staff people are there for each session?
There will be two educators in addition to Camp Counselors. In our camp programs we strive to keep a 1:5 ratio of helpers: campers.
Can my child be signed up with their friend?
Yes, of course. Please just remember that applications are processed on a first-come first-serve basis. The East Bay SPCA cannot hold any spots for potential campers. If your child has a friend that would like to attend Animal Camp, please encourage the parent/guardian to register as soon as possible.
Are children with learning disabilities welcome to attend Animal Camp?
Absolutely! All children are welcome to participate in our educational programs, including Animal Camp. If your child is differently-abled, we will be more than happy to work with you to accommodate his or her needs. Each situation will have to be addressed on an individual basis to ensure that we can best meet the needs of the child and the animals. Please be sure to contact the education department ahead of time so we know if our program will be a good fit for your child: education@eastbayspca.org
Can my child bring their own snack?
Yes. We will have a snack break each day and a snack will be provided, however if your child chooses, they may bring their own snack each day. No peanut butter products will be served to avoid allergies.
Will the campers get to play with the animals?
Each day of camp will include animal interaction. For the safety of the children and the animals, our staff will choose which animals are appropriate for visiting and interacting with each day. If there are not any available shelter animals, a certified therapy animal will visit that day.
How early can I bring up my child to camp?
Campers may not be brought to camp any earlier than 8:45 in the morning. The doors will not open before then. Campers must also be picked up by 3:15 pm each day.
Does the East Bay SPCA offer extended care?
Unfortunately not at this time. Campers cannot arrive early, and must be picked up immediately after camp.
Can my child bring their pet to camp?
No. For the safety of the other camper and animals in the building, please refrain from bringing pets to camp, even to drop off or pick up campers.
My child has attended Animal Camp before—will it be different this year?
Yes! We have revised and refreshed our curriculum to incorporate even more hands on lessons.  There will be new games, different crafts, and of course different animals. While some of the concepts or subjects remain the same or similar throughout all of our camps, we create new lessons and activities for all of our camp programs! We find that children still enjoy coming to our programs, even if they have been before.
Are scholarships available?
Yes, we offer a limited number of scholarships for individuals wishing to attend any of our programs, except birthday parties. Anyone interested may apply for a scholarship as they are awarded for both merit and need. To apply for a scholarship  you will want to register online and select that you are interested in a scholarship during the registration process as you will then be lead to the scholarship application. 
Do you hire camp counselors?
Yes we hire seasonal staff for our Summer session to facilitate the program. Our counselor positions are filled with local youth workers as well as some of our existing volunteers or education program participants.
