East Bay SPCA summer Animal Camp is here! We invite your child to join us for a week of activities, animals and all-around fun! Offered to children entering grades 1-5 in the fall, Animal Camp is an interactive educational experience where children can learn about animals and foster an appreciation for all living beings.

Animal Camp Grades 1-3
$150
Campers will learn all of the key elements when it comes to caring for a pet. Each camper will receive a plush animal on Monday and will be responsible for “fostering” (caring for) that animal for the week. Each day there will be crafts, games and other activities that relate to the care and responsibility of having a pet, including veterinary services and training. Daily animal interaction is included, with both shelter and therapy animals.

Animal Camp Grades 4-5
$150
It’s everything animal! Campers will enjoy daily animal-themed games, crafts and lessons. Guest speakers will introduce your camper to exciting animal related careers. Campers will also participate in service-learning activities which will directly benefit the East Bay SPCA’s wonderful shelter animals. Daily animal interaction is included, with both shelter and therapy animals.

Who is teaching?
Joelle Aguirre, Humane Education Manager, will be teaching each session Animal Camp. Joelle graduated from Cal Poly State University with a Bachelors degree in Animal Science, concentrating in communication and leadership. Along with her education, her life-long work has provided her with the knowledge and experience to teach children about animals. Joelle grew up in Pleasanton and is excited to be educating student in her own community. She is a puppy raising leader for Guide Dogs for the Blind in the Tri-Valley area, where she is currently raising a puppy “Steinbeck” to become a Guide Dog. She also volunteers with her certified therapy dog “Donner” through Tony La Russa’s ARF, where she formerly managed the humane education programs.

1. How many campers are there in each session?
a. There is a maximum of 20 campers per session.
2. How many staff people are there for each session?
a. There will be one educator, Joelle Aguirre, and 4 counselors per session. East Bay SPCA keeps a 5:1 camper: staff ratio for all of its educational programs.
3. Can my child be signed up with their friend?
a. Yes, of course. Please just remember that applications are processed on a first-come first-serve basis. The East Bay SPCA can not hold any spots for potential campers. If your child has a friend that would like to attend Animal Camp, please encourage the parent/guardian to submit an application as soon as possible. There is only one camp session per week, as long as your child and their friend select the same week of camp, they will be in the same group. We apologize there is no space to indicate this on the application.
4. Can my child was held back, can he come to the 4-5 grade camp even though he is entering 3rd grade in the fall?
a. No. the East Bay SPCA does not make any grade-level exceptions for Animal Camp. All children must attend the camp based upon their grade this fall.
5. Are children with learning disabilities welcome to attend Animal Camp?
a. Absolutely! All children are welcome to participate in East Bay’s educational programs, including Animal Camp. If your child is differently-abled, we will be more than happy to work with you to accommodate his or her needs. Each situation will have to be addressed on an individual basis to ensure that we can best meet the needs of the child and the animals.
6. Can my child bring their own snack?
a. Yes. We will have a snack break each day and a snack will be provided, however if your child chooses, they may bring their own snack each day. No peanut butter products will be served to avoid allergies.
7. Will the campers get to play with the animals?
a. Each day of camp will include animal interaction. For the safety of the campers and the animals, shelter animal may not be used in camp. If there are not any available shelter animals, a certified therapy animal will visit that day.
8. How early can I bring up my child to camp?
a. Campers may not be brought to camp any earlier than 8:45 in the morning. The doors will not open before then. Campers must also be picked up by 12:15pm. Any child left after 12:15 without any notification from the parent/guardian will be considered child abandonment and the police will be called.
9. Does the East Bay SPCA offer extended care?
a. Unfortunately not at this time. Campers can not arrive early, and must be picked up immediately after camp.
10. Can my child bring their pet to camp?
a. No. For the safety of the other camper and animals in the building, please refrain from bringing pets to camp, even to drop off or pick up campers.
