Traveling With Your Dog

Few vacations is complete unless your pooch can come along, and it's easy is you follow a few simple rules.

Vacations Are Better If You Take Your Canine Friends Along

Vacations, long weekends, or moving with your dog is becoming more common and there are some tips that can make the experience enjoyable and easier on the stress levels for everybody. A little planning goes a long way.

Dogs are very perceptive and when suitcases or carriers come out, they just know something is up. If a vet visit is the only time your canine companion gets in the carrier or is taken anywhere, the association between car and travel may not be a good one. Well in advance of travel, take the carrier out and let yoru dog sniff and go in and out at will. Put an article of your clothing in it which may provide a sense of security. If your dog is not used to riding in the car, start getting them used to it by just sitting with your pet in the car, talk to it, turn the engine on and don’t go anywhere. Then take short rides, gradually increasing distances. Feeding should be several hours before travel and then small nibbles along the way. If you can, take your own water and be sure to stop and give your animals time for fresh air and to take care of business. It goes without saying that your dog should always be on a leash. Occasionally, a high strung animal may benefit from light sedatives but, this would need to be discussed with your veterinarian. Make sure vaccinations are current and carry the health record with you, just in case.

If your dog is traveling by plane, most airlines require a health certificate which must be issued by your veterinarian within 10 days of your departure date. This will mean a health check and updated vaccinations.

With a little planning and extra patience, your can enjoy a true family vacation by bringing your canine friends along.
