volunteer program
The East Bay SPCA is a non-profit organization. We receive no government funding, nor funding from any national or local humane organizations. Therefore, volunteers are vital. We would not be able to provide the excellent level of care that we do without the dedication, devotion and reliability of the hundreds of volunteers who commit to our organization on a weekly basis.
There are many ways to contribute time to our organization. While we have a very dedicated staff of employees, many tasks critical to ensuring the adoptability of dogs and cats rest on the strong shoulders of our Volunteers.
We have a variety of positions, including:
- Regular, weekly 2-hour commitments in our shelters.
- Regular monthly commitments at Mobile Adoptions or at other special events.
- Various schedules related to special events or one-time needs.
- Only require short term service: Short term service involves volunteer work which does not involve direct contact with our shelter animals. We can only accept community service volunteers looking to earn hours for school requirements.
How to Volunteer
Our volunteers are a key part of our operations. Therefore it is important the every person volunteering for the East Bay SPCA be well trained for the tasks they are asked to do and educated in the procedures that ensure our staff and volunteers' safety. If you are interested in volunteering, there are several steps that must be taken prior to receiving a volunteer assignment. Please note that it can take 1-2 months to become an "official" volunteer once you begin these training process steps:
1. Sign Up for a Volunteer Information Session by email (below). You may attend Information Sessions at either facility, regardless of which one you would like to volunteer at.
Our next Volunteer Information Sessions are:

2. At the Information Session, pick up an application and waiver and submit it at the following Shelter Basics training (date to be announced at Information Session). 3. Identify the
volunteer positions in which you are interested.
4. Attend a Shelter Basics training and start volunteering as a "Shelter Assistant."
5. Attend the appropriate animal-specific training classes after completing a minimum of two hours as a Shelter Assistant.
6. Schedule a time to shadow a Mentor Volunteer, which is someone who has experience in the position in which you will be working.
7. Schedule a regular weekly shift with the Volunteer Coordinator.
We look forward to your involvement with our organization. In addition to a little cat or dog hair on your clothes, you will go home with the knowledge that your efforts made a difference in the life of a homeless cat or dog in your community.
