Adoption Prep Volunteers
Purpose: Adoptions Prep volunteers teach adoptable dogs basic compulsory behaviors so that they can move into adoptions. These volunteers will give the dogs the skills to help make the dogs more adoptable, and to help keep them in their homes. They will also be able to sign off on dogs

Duties include:
· Housebreaking dogs
· Socializing Puppies
· Exercising dogs
· Tether training
· Tie Down Training
· Crate Training
· Kennel Enrichment
· Dog Calming
Shifts: Shifts are available 7 days a week. |
· Checking and keeping kennels clean and “contraband free”
· Carrying kennel keys
· Assisting clients on open days
· Noting any behavioral or medical concerns and reporting them to staff.
· Assisting Canine Associates with public dog training classes (approval required)
· Record Keeping: indicating which dogs have been socialized during your shift

Age Requirements
· GM Coaches must be 18 and over with the following exceptions
· Children 16 – 18 must be pre-approved to handle dogs on their own after completing all training with their parent or guardian.
· Children 10 – 15 may only volunteer as GM Coaches under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian, and may not handle the dogs’ leashes.
Training Required
· EBSPCA General Volunteer Orientation
· Dog Good Manners Coach Training Class (includes Puppy Socializing) - 3 hours
· Shadow shift with an experienced volunteer
· (OPTIONAL) Basic Obedience Training: $50 fee which is refundable after 6 months of volunteering.
Skills & Qualities Needed
· Ability to take a lot of direction
· Positive and solution oriented attitude
· Ability to handle adolescent dogs, OR the ability to identify appropriate dogs that are manageable for YOUR skill level
· Ability to work well with other volunteers and staff, as well as interacting with clients.
· Mental Sharpness: the ability to maintain situational awareness
· Help facilitate a “Culture of Development” within the organization: treating each person with respect, courtesy, and ensuring that they leave the East Bay SPCA having had the best experience possible, with the hope that they may become financial supporters of the organization.
Required Tools
· 6 foot nylon or leather leash
· Badge (provided)
· EBSPCA Apron ($10)
· Treats (hot dogs, cheese, Natural Balance, etc)
· (OPTIONAL) Sensible Harness - $25
· (OPTIONAL) Gentle Leader - $15
