Dog Groomers

 

Purpose: Dogs who are clean and smell great have a better chance of going home! Dog Groomers provide this invaluable service to our shelter dogs, making sure they are comfortable, mat free, clean, and ready for adoption!

 

Shifts: Dog Groomers meet every Saturday at 9:30am

 

Duties Include:

·         Determining which dogs should and can be bathed

·         Keeping dogs clean for the weekend

·         Clipping nails (if comfortable)

·         Trimming mats

·         Bathing dogs

·         Housebreaking dogs

·         Blow Drying and brushing dogs

·         Carrying kennel keys

·         Interacting with clients and potential adopters.

 

Age Requirements

·         Children 16 – 18 must be pre-approved to volunteer on their own after completing all training with their parent or guardian.

 

 

Skills and Qualities Needed

·         Ability to take direction

·         People oriented

·         Willingness to get wet and dirty!

·         Ability to handle and lift strong dogs.

·         Mental Sharpness: the ability to maintain situational awareness

·         Positive and solution oriented

·         Ability to read dog body language.

·         Flexibility and willingness to do a variety of tasks

·         Help facilitate a “Culture of Development” within the organization: treating each person with respect, courtesy, and ensuring that they leave the East Bay SPCA having had the best experience possible, with the hope that they may become financial supporters of the organization.

 

Training Required

·         Volunteer Orientation

·         Dog Walker Class

·         Shadow shift with an experienced volunteer

·         On-the-job training with the Grooming volunteers

 

Tools Required

·         6 foot leash

·         EBSPCA Apron ($10)

·         Badge (provided)

·         Treats (hot dogs, Natural Balance, cheese, etc)
